Normally, we think of catching colds or getting the flu during the winter months. But the truth is that you can get sick at any time of the year. When you are feeling under the weather, the last thing you may feel like doing is dragging yourself to the bathroom to brush your teeth. However, you can’t ignore your oral hygiene routine just because you are sick.

Although you may want to stay on the couch or in bed, brushing your teeth can refresh your mouth and may even help you feel better. If you have a cough or a sore throat, you may find some relief in cough syrup or cough drops. However, you should buy the sugar-free varieties of both. Cough syrup can coat your teeth, and you will have the cough drops in your mouth for a long time. If either of them contains sugar, they will contribute to enamel erosion and tooth decay. You may want a cup of tea to make you feel better. If you do have a cup, drink your tea without the sugar or lemon. Sometimes, being sick includes vomiting. If that happens to you, don’t reach for your toothbrush right away. First, rinse your mouth with a solution of baking soda and water, and then brush your teeth thirty minutes later. The acids from your stomach are harmful to your teeth, and brushing right away can damage them.
